Want a coloured or transparent background, a gradient or a logo? Use the QR code colour tool.
3Your QR code
The number never leaves your device: the code is made in your browser. We count anonymous page views (no cookies).
How a calling QR code works
The code holds a tel: link with the number in international format, for example tel:+442079460958. When someone scans it, their phone opens the dialer with the number filled in. They still tap Call themselves, so a scan never places a call on its own.
It's a static code: the number is written into the pattern itself. There's no redirect or short link in between, so nothing can switch it off later. The flip side is that you can't change the number without printing a new code.
Before you print
- Scan the downloaded file with two different phones before you print a batch.
- Keep a quiet border around the code. The download already includes a margin of 4 modules.
- As a rule of thumb, print it at least about 2 cm (0.8 in) wide for close-up scanning, and larger for posters seen from a distance.
- Print the number in text next to the code too, for people who'd rather dial it.
FAQ
How do I make a QR code that calls a phone number?
Pick the country, type the number and download the PNG or SVG. The tool turns your number into international format and puts it in a tel: link inside the code. The box under the code shows exactly what a phone will read.
Does scanning the code call the number straight away?
No. The phone opens its dialer with the number filled in, and the person taps Call. Phone camera apps open the dialer and wait for that tap.
Why do I need the country code?
A QR code can be scanned anywhere, by phones on any network. The full international number (with + and the country code) works from abroad as well as at home. A number without a country code may not connect when the caller's phone is on a foreign network.
Do calling QR codes expire?
Codes made here don't. The number is stored in the code itself, with no link to a server that could be switched off. The code works as long as the number does. Some generators make "dynamic" codes that go through their own short link; those can stop working if the subscription ends.
Can I use it for WhatsApp or text messages?
Not this code. A tel: code opens the phone dialer only. WhatsApp and SMS use different links, which this tool doesn't make.
Can I change the number later?
No. A static code can't be edited after it's printed. Make a new code for the new number.
